1) Nzambani Rock

Commonly referred to as Ivia ya Nzambani, this massive stone outcrop rises roughly 600 feet above the ground. It lies about 8 kilometers from Kitui Town along the Kitui–Mutitu road near Nzambani market, Kenya. Adjacent to the rock are St. Peters Nzambani Boys’ Secondary School and Nzambani Primary School. Local legend claims that anyone who circles the rock seven times transforms into the opposite sex—a story passed down through generations, though no one is known to have attempted it. Numerous other tales also explain the origins of this fascinating formation.

2) Mwingi Game Reserve

Covering about 745 square kilometers, Mwingi Game Reserve can be reached via Thika to Mwingi and then northeast through Kyuso village. Animals from neighbouring parks and reserves often roam into the area. Designated as a wilderness activity zone, it offers exceptional experiences including fly camping, camel safaris, and horseback adventures.

3) South Kitui National Reserve

Established in 1979, this reserve spans approximately 1,833 square kilometers. It is a common migration route for wildlife moving to and from Tsavo National Park. Visitors may spot lions, elephants, giraffes, leopards, and the lesser kudu. The reserve is a serene, less-explored destination ideal for birdwatching, game viewing, and camping.

4) Mutomo Hill Plant Sanctuary

Located about 75 kilometers south of Kitui Town, this botanical sanctuary hosts over 100 species of indigenous trees and plants, many believed to have medicinal properties. It’s a great spot for birdwatching, nature walks, camping, and picnicking.

5) Ngomeni Rock

Situated in Mwingi, this picturesque rocky outcrop is surrounded by thorny shrubs and numerous caves—perfect for exploration during a visit. A large dam lies nearby, making the area ideal for hiking and for taking in panoramic views of Mwingi Town and its surroundings.

6) Ikoo Valley

Found in Migwani, Mwingi West sub-county, this striking V-shaped valley offers excellent vantage points for photography. From here, you can capture rolling hills and breathtaking landscapes across Kitui County and beyond.
